Phaser.io – The HTML5 and Javascript Gaming Framework I’ve Been Looking For

Last week, a friend approached me with the idea to compete in Serenity Forge’s weekend-long competition “Game Jam“. Our development group met up to discuss this event and what we wanted to accomplish. Everyone at the table had some web development experience, however no one had specific game development experience.

We know we wanted something web-based and browser compatible. Our key concern was letting this project grow too large, as we are limited to a weekend of development for the competition.

After some googling and research into what is available, we decided to use the HTML5 and javascript gaming framework Phaser.io. I went home and played around with Phaser for a few days and I’m excited to report that it’s everything that I thought it would be and more. The documentation is verbose and the website provides examples to solve almost any gaming need.

The theme of the Game Jam has yet to be announced, however with just a few hours of Phaser experience, I feel ready to tackle any game development challenge.
